I've been a fan and student of baseball for as long as I can remember. It's a great sport to play, coach and watch. I particularly enjoy watching young players grow and excel through little league, high school and college ball. And then there's that special few who go on to the majors. One of the abilities that seems to be a constant is hitting the ball hard with great bat speed.
How to Increase Baseball Bat Speed
Learning how to increase baseball bat speed can change an average ball player into a power hitter. Every player wants to be a power hitter. Regardless of size, any player who has good eye-hand coordination and makes contact on a consistent basis can drive the ball deeper and harder just by learning how to increase bat speed. Every 1 mph increase in bat speed adds 5 feet to the distance the ball travels!
Some years ago as a little league parent I saw players who appeared to have overcome fear of the ball and had good mechanics, but just didn't hit the ball hard. And it seemed that size didn't matter. There's a natural tendency to expect the bigger players to hit the ball hard and long. This is true if they make good contact with the ball. What I found amazing and fun to watch were some of the smaller players who could really drive the ball with some consistency. I recall at least one father asking after the game, "I don't know who your boy's hitting coach is, but I'd sure like to have his name and number."
I enjoy watching travel ball and high school baseball. This is where all the little league coaching can come together and produce some really good players. At this level the players who draw the most attention from coaches and scouts are those who consistently drive the ball hard. (Of course, if you're throwing an 80 plus mph fast ball you'll draw attention.)
The difference between an average hitter and a power hitter is what some call "quick hands" or "bat head speed".
