It shouldn't take more than 7 days to house train your new puppy, or an older dog if new to the home. There are many different methods to house train a dog, some work and some don't. Knowing and using a proven method will save you a lot of frustration. The first thing you should do is begin the training right when you bring the puppy home.
You need to know what equipment and supplies work best for your situation. Outdoors is usually the best place for potty training. There is fresh air and many intriguing smells for your dog. Even then you may want to use a doggy crate as part of the training. Living in an apartment or high rise building you might choose potty pads, papers, or a litter box.
Even with your best efforts there may be accidents on your carpet or flooring. Properly cleaning a soiled area is very important, particularly in getting rid of the smell. If the smell remains it could trigger a recurrence of the accident. Dogs like many animals are very territorial and will mark their area to let other animals know. However, if your dog starts marking the furniture inside the home, that becomes a different matter. Veterinarians usually suggest spaying or neutering as the only solution to the problem.
Your dog will learn to recognize your behavior traits, when you're happy, sad or mad. They want to please you and they will respond most favorably when you praise them.
