Why do some people study less than others and get better grades? The standard answer seems to be "they are smarter". Are they smarter or do they study smarter? That question led to a bit of research regarding the basics of studying and how to improve. So I wrote an article to help open the doors to better understanding.
Study Strategy for Better Grades
I have often been advised that if I devote more time studying I will learn more and make much better grades. Not always true! I discovered it's not how much time you study but HOW you study. To receive better grades and become successful you should find a study strategy that accelerates learning with the least amount of effort.
Environment is very important. Remember the study area or room in school? It is dedicated to studying, properly lit, and quiet, having minimal distractions. That is an excellent basic setting that can help make learning easier. Locate a spot where you live which has a similar advantage. I occasionally enjoy instrumental music to help mellow out any background noise. Vocals can be distracting, however select what is good for you. iPods work good, I but I favor speakers when I am in a separate room.
Diet can play a part. Okay, you have heard this before, you are what you eat and drink. This is also true with regards to mental skill and learning processes. Alcohol, a lot of sugar, and a very full stomach can slow you down mentally and physically. Plan what you eat accordingly.
Focus is a must. I was helping a high school student with a school assignment. Everything was going good until he appeared to lose interest. He was sending text messages with one hand beneath the table! Cell phones and text messaging are good ways to communicate, although not while studying. You decide the best way to overcome this distraction and keep focus.
