One of the reasons people struggle with mathematics in high school and college is they don't have a good foundational understanding of the basic concepts. This isn't necessarily the fault of teachers and parents. Kids like to do things that are fun and math seldom falls into that category. After some research I wrote an article about the "why" and "how" of math being fun for kids.
Make Math Fun for Kids
I have always liked math. However I didn't have as many distractions as our kids have today. Today, because of all the media options and computer games it's a wonder our kids learn as much as they do. Understanding the fundamentals of mathematics is important during the pre-teen years in order to be skillful in the various mathematics disciplines that will follow. We need to find strategies to make math a lot more fun for our kids.
As parents and teachers we seem to be competing with most of the fun things available to them; TV, DVDs, Nintendo, Play Station, Xbox, Wii, iPod, as well as the various outdoor sports. Why? Well, a lot of what they do is fun, challenging and there's always something new to experience. Many kids don't like math simply because it is boring and not fun.
Teaching methods change. Several years ago the buzz was all about the "new math" and how much better it was. In mathematics there is a good deal of memorization; times tables, formulas, theorems, and the like. This worked, but it was hard work for most. There will always be memorization in instructional math. However, if we make the process fun, much more will be retained.
Having good math expertise is important to every kid's future. Math, is some manner, touches every facet of life. We can't get along in this world without it. We may as well help to make it more fun for our kids to prepare them for the future.
Let's take a lesson from computer games. They're innovative, challenging, always a new goal to accomplish, and you can play alone or with friends. This is fun. And so we need to find imaginative ways to motivate our kids to master the basics of math. Thankfully that has already been done for us. On the internet you can discover many programs to help motivate our kids. There are programs that enable you to download the information right now and begin working with your kids. There are board games, card games, print and play games and game ideas that can motivate your kids to want to play and learn, having fun doing so.
