Want a Free Car?

I've seen several cars in our neighborhood that are artfully covered with advertisements. I believe they were all new model cars. I assumed they were business owners advertising on their personal or company car. After some research I found that these cars could be part of free car programs sponsored by various companies. I was so intrigued I decided to write an article about this new (to me,at least) advertising strategy.

NEW Free Car

Free car? This must be some kind of joke, right? Actually, no. Have you ever seen a bus, taxi or truck with some very prominent advertisement? Sure, we all have. You might consider this type of advertising as a traveling or mobile billboard. Many people notice a billboard every day. But if you never travel that particular route you may never see that message.

Obviously, companies want their message to be seen by as many people as possible. Many have slated a portion of their advertising budget towards visual mobile messaging using cars driven by people as their personal vehicle. The premise is you will notice and recall more from an advertisement wrapped around a car than from that on public transportation and delivery vehicles. Moreover, using personal cars there is greater potential for wider geographic exposure. The advertisement wrapped car would be seen on all the routes you drive and in the parking areas of every place you go.

When approved through a membership agency sponsoring companies will provide you with a new car wrapped in their advertisement. "Wrapped" is just what it means. Remember the old magnet advertisements stuck on the door of a car or truck? Well, the new technology is a film-like substance that is applied to the car, i.e. wrapped, that displays the message. There are various degrees of coverage by the wrapping.

There is an alternative to a wrapped new car and that is to wrap your own car and pay you to drive it. From my research I discovered that the wrapping does not harm your original paint, at least 99% of the time. There could be a problem if it's an after-market point job.

There is an application and approval process for membership to be eligible for the sponsoring programs. A small one time membership fee is required ranging from about $30 to $50 depending on whether you choose a 1, 2 or 5 years membership.
